The main motivation behind sodacans.org is to incentivize people to start recycling, and to leverage local social networks to help sell recyclables, locally.

While many people realize that recycling is good for the environment, the ones that act on it do it out of the goodness of their hearts. We have taken a slightly different approach to encourage people to recycle. We believe that there needs to be a stronger incentive for people to start recycling. And that incentive is being able to profit from recycling.

This service is not based in any particular location or region. The intent of this service is to encourage people to recycle. Regardless of where one lives, there is always an opportunity to either sell recyclables to junkyards, recycling centers or to pledge them to a cause. It is just a matter of taking that one extra step.

There is no redemption system, and we do not set any commodity prices.

Prices are driven by the negotiation process between people that can sell recyclables and the local junkyards, redemption centers, etc, at one end. And at the other end, by the negotiation process between people that save and list recyclables on sodacans.org, and people that sell them to the local junkyards, etc. Currently, this negotiation process is done offline.

The commodity markets have bottomed out, which directly impacts what the market will pay for recyclables. At the same time, given the state of the economy and the employment situation, people are eagerly looking for any opportunity to make a few extra dollars. Everybody uses items that can be recycled, like soda cans, plastic bottles, paper, and others. So after you are done using them, why not be able to sell and make a profit.

No, the program is not an alternative to bottle bills. As a matter of fact, it promotes making money by collecting State redemption deposits on bottled beverages.

Instead of selling recyclables, you also have the option to donate recyclables to a cause. You can make that selection when posting a Ad for the recyclables that you have collected.
